Dr. Julian Capel is a former student-athlete turned scholar. His passion for mentorship, education, and development is fueled by his own student-athlete and life experiences. Dr. Capel is a visionary speaker, advisor, mentor, and leader dedicated to positive change and human improvement. Dr. Capel is an inspirational speaker, educator, consultant, and servant leader committed to bringing about major improvement and elevating humanity. Dr. Capel is a highly sought after presenter because of his engaging and participatory style, real approach, record of success, and sense of humor. His influential workshops on leadership development, resiliency and grit, career development, effective communication, healthy relationships, athletic identity and transitioning to life after sports have been featured on several college campuses. He has also partnered with serveral organizations and national conferences as well. Dr. Capel’s clients and appearances include Northern Arizona University Athletic Department, Colonial Intercollegiate Athletics Association (CIAA), North Carolina Central University Football Team, Fayetteville State University, University of South Carolina- Columbia, Virginia Commonwealth University Athletic Department, The Tulsa Initiatives Inc., AthLife Foundation, Black Student Athlete Summit, and the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA). Dr. Capel has been a mentor for hundreds of young adults and appeared on several media outlets and podcast. Most recently, Dr. Capel has served as the Chief Learning Officer with Team Excel. Before that, Dr. Capel served as the Director of Student and Community Outreach at the University of South Carolina and the Director of Student Engagement at Fayetteville State University. His skills and over 15 years of experience in leadership allows him to excel in the role of educator and his professional experiences and goals align with any organization that is centered around inclusivity, achievement, and growth. Throughout his entire career, he has been successful in student and student-athlete development, adult learning, teaching, conflict resolution, mentoring, and contributing to shared objectives. He earned a Bachelors in Sociology and a Masters in Sports Leadership from Virginia Commonwealth University, as well as a Doctorate in Educational Leadership from Fayetteville State University. As a testament to his work, Dr. Capel was recognized by the NCAA Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) as the Dr. Dave Pariser Faculty Mentor Award winner for his dedication to supporting and mentoring student-athletes’ lifelong learning, competition, and well-being. He was also awarded the FSU Founders Graduate Student of the Year for demonstrating university community service, exemplified leadership responsibility, extracurricular activities, and academic achievement. Dr. Capel and his former teammate, Dr. Drew Johnson, host the 'Cape and Drew: The Real Tick-Tock Podcast' where the two share their truths about playing sports and transitioning into life after sports. Dr. Capel has served on the boards of various non-profit organizations, which reflects his enthusiasm for parenthood and student development. Dr. Capel is also a proud father and husband. They discuss what student-athletes really go through, overcoming obstacles, the power of self-awareness and more! Cape and Drew’s goals are simple: to empower and encourage student-athletes to believe that they are in fact more than athletes and sports are only a part of their identity.
